ADHD Awareness Month

ADHD can present challenges in the workplace, such as distractibility, difficulty prioritising tasks and ineffective time management leading to employment issues. Employees with ADHD are  3 times more likely to quit on impulse.

By having effective workplace support for employees with ADHD such as limiting distractions, assigning a mentor and more frequent check-ins, this can ensure a harmonious and successful work place.  Don’t forget that along with limitations, also comes great pluses as each ADHD suffer will also processes a unique skill set and strengths that others may not have.

Here are some tips for supporting employees with ADHD:

•       Offer a flexible work patterns – A typical 9-5 day can leave you with missed deadlines from your employees with ADHD if they struggle to stay focused throughout an eight-hour workday. So, offering a flexible day may  allow them to set their own schedules according to when they’re most productive.

•       Ensuring opportunities to give feedback – It is important your employees feel they can give honest feedback. By having a two-way line of communication, you can establish what is working well and what’s not.  Always ask them if there is anything further you could do to support them with their time in work.

•       Create a sustainable environment – Office environment considerations can be particularly important for employees with ADHD as the environment they are in can have a stronger influence than it might have on your other employees. Complete risk assessments often to ensure that a safe and suitable workplace is being offered.

•       Resignations – always discuss an employee’s resignation to ensure it’s not made on impulse.
